SSL Certificates

So you have created a valuable online property, but did you secure it from online security threats? Security of your website is not just your concern, but is also the concern of your visitors, especially if they are considering buying your product or service online. To make your website a safe place for yourself and your visitors, protect it using an effective security tool.

There are many security tools available today, which can help you manage and control security risks in the virtual environment. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate, also known as Digital Certificate is one such tool to secure your site. ┬áSSL creates a secure link between your website and the visitor’s browser, so that all transactions between the 2 are secured and private. SSL encryption will prevent hackers from stealing private information, such as bank details, names and addresses, of your customers.

  • How to install SSL certificates

You need to install the SSL Certificate onto your web server to secure your user sessions with web browsers. You will have to go through different levels of vetting, depending on the type of SSL Certificate you choose. Once installed, you can connect to the website through https://www.domain.com. Using https tells the server to establish a secure connection with the browser so that all the web traffic between the web server and the web browser are secured.

  • How does an SSL certificate work
    • When a web browser requests a secure page, using https://, the web server sends its public key with its certificate.
    • The browser then verifies 3 things – if the certificate was issued by a trusted party, validity of the certificate and that the certificate is associated with the contacted site.
    • Using the public key, the browser encrypts a random symmetric encryption key to send to the server with the required encrypted URL required and the encrypted http data.
    • The web server decrypts this symmetric encryption key and uses it to decrypt the URL and the data.
    • The web server then returns the requested html document and encrypted http data.
    • Finally the browser decrypts the http data and html document using the symmetric key to display the content.
  • Choosing a SSL certificate provider

Although the choice broadly depends on your specific service requirements and expected transaction volumes, there are 5 factors to evaluate before selecting a SSL certificate provider.

    • Data encryption level
    • Certification standards
    • Web browser compatibility
    • Number of domains you can secure
    • Price
